Overview

Tom Friedland is a partner in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group at Goodmans.

His litigation experience spans a wide range of corporate/commercial, securities, environmental and municipal law matters. He has represented clients at all levels of court in Ontario (and many other Canadian jurisdictions), as well as before various administrative and regulatory boards, tribunals and public inquiries, including the Ontario, Alberta and Quebec Securities Commissions. Tom frequently represents clients in international and domestic arbitrations, as well as in mediations and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.

In corporate/commercial and securities matters, Tom acts for clients involved in disputes across many different sectors, including clients in the hospitality, health care, oil and gas, mining, manufacturing, alternative power, technology, real estate, land development, construction, salvage and recycling, auto dealership, pension fund, gaming and entertainment industries. Tom has acted for more than 50 different clients in obtaining court approval for corporate arrangement transactions in multiple provinces, including for several of the most significant Canadian commercial transactions over the last 25 years. He has also acted in many oppression remedy, dissent, proxy contest and poison pill matters before the courts and provincial securities commissions.

In his municipal law practice, Tom applies his diverse experience acting for developers and land owners in disputes under the Ontario Building Code Act, Municipal Act and Heritage Act, in challenges to development charges by-laws and municipal property assessments and in Divisional Court appeals and judicial review hearings arising from planning board decisions.

In his environmental law practice, Tom regularly acts for clients involved in contaminated lands disputes and in regulatory matters involving the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks and Environment and Climate Change Canada.
