A founding member of Goodmans, Herb joined the firm as its fourth lawyer in 1955. He had a broad-ranging corporate practice, including appearing before transport, communications and licensing agencies, boards and tribunals; advising on mergers and acquisitions; acting as a consultant for family-owned enterprises and estates; and representing sports and entertainment clients.
Herb had a significant part in building the foundation of the firm, serving as its chair from 1980 to 1992. Herb has played the central role in the recruitment of law students at Goodmans for more than fifty years. He helps select the best and the brightest minds to join the firm and follow in the fine legal tradition that he helped create.
Over the years Herb has held a number of directorships, including serving on the boards of Sun Media, John Labatt Ltd, and Gluskin Sheff and Associates. He was also a long-term Director of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and the Tarragon Theatre. Herb has been involved with the Toronto Blue Jays since their inception and is a past director and chairman.
After five decades of engagement in the practice of law, Herb now maintains Non-Practising Lawyer status with the Ontario Bar Association.
